An Open Letter.....

It was a Thursday morning in November.
I remember it well. Many years have flown by since
but the memory lingers on. My high paying
corporate job had just been made redundant!

That day many of my colleagues across the country
got the same news. It was 12 years ago.
Instead of looking for another job, I went looking for a business.

I have long since replaced my corporate income.

field had shifted, and that job security was a thing
of the past. I was right.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics: 2 million people
in the last 12 months have lost their jobs. In February alone,
357,000 people had no job at the end of the day

I went looking for a business of my own. I knew the
pitfalls of starting something from scratch so went looking
for something that would not require me to risk a lot
of money. I met with my accountant and he added a few more things
that I should keep top of mind in my search.
My accountant recommended that I should:

1. Find a company that is already successful but
one that offers a profit based partnership.
I thought he was talking about franchises.
NO. Franchises are expensive he said,
and come with a high degree of risk. All you
are doing is buying yourself a job and a 24/7 headache,
was his observation.

2. Look for a company that provides a need,
preferably something that is consumable. A
consumable need means repeat business. Repeat
business based on consumable staples is recession proof.

3. Make sure that the company has a good reputation.

4. Look at the business model that the company
employs. Is there a system to plug into?

5. Check into the support, the tools, the mentoring.

6. Not spend a lot of money – and to make sure
that monies spent are refundable.

I thought he had gone off his rocker. I was hoping to buy
an existing business but he said that any business that
is for sale is usually for sale because it is not doing
so well. Did I want to risk the capital? Did I want
to work my fingers to the bone turning it around?
Did I want to pay everyone else before I paid myself?
Instead he talked about direct marketing
(that was his term), and together we laid down the rules –
the criteria for a business.

You know what they say that when the mind is open, the
opportunitypresents itself. Within two weeks I was
introduced to a company that enjoyed a great reputation,

of all, is that they become just passing ships in lives of their own families.

I have friends who routinely put in 60, 70 and even more
hours per week. They are stressed to the gills.
Their children are growing up around them but they
are not enjoying their children’s lives. One day
their son will have graduated from college and they’ll
look at this handsome young man with awe and wonder where the years gone.
One day they will be at their daughter’s wedding and wonder
when did their little girl become a woman?
