My name is Elaine Herbert, my home is in South Africa, (the Eastern Free State), near the Maluti Mountains of Lesotho. I reckon this has to be one of the most beautiful areas, anywhere.

I once read that Lesotho has the highest 'lowest altitude' in the world, winters up in the mountains are severe but our winters don't last too long and the climate for the rest of the year is usually perfect.

I had heard about the internet, I’d heard good things, bad things. Some of the stories were extraordinary.

I bought a second-hand computer and was given a number of bits and pieces to go with it. Then I was given more bits and pieces. By the time I got everything wired together the array of equipment covered a surface of about 2 meters x 3 meters. The assortment of wires had to be seen to be believed but it worked!

I could dial up, send and receive email and I could explore a whole new virtual world. But I was lost in this new world and sent a frantic message to a friend, “What’s a double-left-click?”

I couldn’t understand why he wasn’t at all cheered by the question, I think his sigh could have been heard on the other side of the Witteberge. “Are you SURE you want to carry on with this?” he asked. Yes I was sure, of course I was sure, wouldn’t it all fall into place as soon as I knew what a double-left click was?

I think it’s enough to say that I now understand exactly why he sighed. I am sure I have tried the patience of some very patient people, people to whom I now often send thoughts of thanks.

I have learnt so much and I’ve discovered that the virtual world is not a new world. It is a world of real people communicating, and is therefore a reflection of the real world. And I hear good things, bad things. I hear extraordinary stories too.

About my logo

Sorting through a pile of old magazines, each with something I had particularly wanted to keep, I realized I’d kept articles about so many different things, a railway line no longer in use, a steam roller still in use, sports trivia, the list goes on, and there were knitting patterns, recipes and endless tips for self improvement that I’ll probably never use. In the middle of the pile was a sheet of paper, with notes about a self replicating search engine.

‘Chaos Theory’ I thought.

And then I thought, ‘Why not? Why not link the steam engine to the search engine?’

My logo is a copy of a watercolour by Mike Martin. It was copied for the cover of a brochure as well as for postcards in 1991 and Mike later gave me the original painting. I was really sorry when the original was damaged, when a water pipe burst, but I kept it and have now copied it again.

In 1991 there had been rumors that a branch line nearby, know locally as the ZigZag Line would, in all probably, no longer be maintained. The cost of maintaining it could not be justified. The regular rail service had been cancelled and there were not that many special excursions booked.

Knowing that it may not be possible in a year or two’s time was the catalyst, and two really special excursions from Zastron to Barkly East took place during November 1991.
