HI, MY NAME IS;
NAT KOMBA -- DIRECTOR
*
*
During my refuge in Guinea, I was privilege to receive the Lord Jesus Christ as my personal savior at the Nongo Baptist Church. Since then I started developing a desire to shear this same good news to my people in Sierra Leone.
During this time I was privilege to work with Mercy ships as a translator, and I was offered a scholarship to pursue a discipleship training, and during this time the lord laid this burden of reaching children with the good news of Christ.
After the war, I finally made up my mind o come and work with children some of whom are either orphans or child soldiers.
This was like an impossible thing for a returnee to do, but with what the lord is presently doing, I now realize that with God, all things are possible.
This work started early last year by visiting villages in and around Masiaka , a town situated 47 miles off the city.
Just with one year, this ministry has created a lot of impact especially among street children in the community that one of the citizens has offered a whole house as a center where we can meet every Saturdays for prayers and bible studies.
Presently, we are working with about sixty children every week teaching them the word of God through singing, dramas etc.
This is something incredible as 90% of the inhabitants in these villages are Muslims.
PLEASE PRAY THAT WE CAN HAVE THE FUNDS TO BUY FOOD & CLOTHES FOR THESE CHILDREN!

WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE?
Masiaka is a town situated at about 47 miles north of the country from Freetown, and as a link to Freetown, it was the stronghold of the all famous rebel group called west side boys.
With their heavy presence in this area, they were able to recruit almost all the children into their ranks, as some of the girls were use as sex slaves.
Today with the timely intervention of God, this place is like a paradise were children can play and comfortably hear the message of Christ.
Temne is the most dominated language and these people do farming as their daily life.

CHILDREN IN WORSHIP AND PRAISE!
RELIGION IN OUR AREA
Though the Temnes claim to be Muslims, they still hold on to their culture of animism,-- which means people worship and pray to things like trees and rocks, etc.) Also they worship ancestral spirits, and secret societies.
Through the establishment of this center we can now care for children coming even from other villages to receive from the Lord.

OUR VISION
Though the primary reason of this center is to teach Christ to these kids, our ministry is also faced with the challenges of sending these children back to school so they can rebuild their lives and be self reliant in the future. So in light of that, we have the intention of starting a school which will mainly give for vulnerable children.
Also in an attempt to help reduce the rate of hunger in these communities, we are also focused in doing agriculture as also a means of teaching the people the principle of self reliant. Our main aim is to see that this type of centers be establish around this community.

CHRISTMAS IN MASIAKA
This was one of my most remarkable moments for me during the past year, as for the fist time, the center organize two days of activities, including a children’s vocational Bible studies, film show and on Christmas day we feasted in the Lord with the kids, as a sign of Gods love and care towards them. Christmas Dinner is such a blessing to these who do not have daily food and more than one nice change of clothes.

Good Greetings, Nat,
Thank you for your interest in the Peacebuilding & Development Institute’s Summer Professional Training Program! This e-mail serves as both a confirmation that we have received your completed application and a warm welcome to our program!
I am attaching two letters to this email, in one document. Please use the first letter as part of your visa application. I hope that the second letter will facilitate your individual fundraising efforts. You can expect to receive original letters in the mail soon.
The Visa Process
In order to come to the United States for the Peacebuilding & Development Institute’s Summer Professional Training Program, you will most likely need to acquire a B-1 visa. Please start the visa application process as soon as possible, as the process can take days or months. When addressing the U.S. Embassy or Consulate, please be aware that the Summer Program is NOT an academic or degree program, but rather a three-week professional training program. If you mention academic courses, a visa officer may misunderstand and require you to obtain an I-20 visa. You are NOT qualified to obtain an I-20 or an F-visa – instead, you need a B-1 visa. If you have any questions, please visit the U.S. Department of State website: http://www.state.gov We at PDI wish you the best in the visa process.
The Funding Process We at the Peacebuilding & Development Institute wish that we had unlimited funds to help all of our participants to attend our Institute. However, our opportunities to assist with scholarships and funding are indeed limited, and we understand that the fundraising may be a very difficult process. Therefore, I am providing you with some helpful leads and hints. Be creative and do not give up; there is money out there. It might be helpful to break down the costs and ask one organization or private donor for tuition fees, another organization for airfare, another organization for room expenses, and another for meals. Donors may feel more comfortable giving you smaller chunks of money for targeted expenses.
The estimated breakdown of your
Total program costs:
Tuition: $735 per week
Food: $105 per week ($15-20 day x 7 days)
Housing: $39 per night for double room
$55 per night for a single room
Travel: $1000 – 2000 depending where
You are Remember to adjust the costs above as necessary if you intend to come for more than one week.
-Be creative and strategic.
-Contact a variety of organizations in the country where you live or work. Approach local, national, and international NGOs, faith organizations, women’s organizations, business associations, etc. Certain foundations offer scholarships and funding for professional development trainings like ours.
-When contacting these potential funding sources, think about how they will benefit from supporting you financially. You may want to commit to writing an article or two for their newsletters or speaking to their community, congregation, etc; after all, you will have gained a rich experience at the Summer Program, having met and worked with a diverse group of individuals from conflict and post-conflict regions all over the world.
-If an organization cannot support you financially, ask its representatives if they know any other organizations or individuals who can help.
-Search “funding / scholarships from (where you are) to U.S.” on the internet (www.google.com)
-If it is appropriate, it will be more helpful to ask for funding as a part of an organization rather than just an individual. Ask organizations to advertise you as a practitioner who wants more professional development training.
Scholarships
The Peacebuilding & Development Institute can offer a handful of half-week and full-week scholarships. If you are coming for two or three weeks, PDI can waive your tuition fees for one week. If you can only attend for one week, we can waive half of that week’s tuition. Unfortunately, PDI cannot pay for any other expenses, including travel, lodging, meals, or additional course tuition fees.
If you want a scholarship application, please let us know and we will email it to you.
Once you have applied for a scholarship, we will respond as soon as possible. However, please do not hesitate in your fund-raising efforts for the remaining expenses.

Housing in Washington, DC
You have several options for housing in Washington, DC. The most convenient option will be on-campus housing at American University. Please contact Housing & Dining Programs directly:

The costs are approximately $221 per week to share a room and $300 per week for an individual room.
There is a meal option with Housing & Dining Programs, but it may be least expensive to simply pay cash for food, and to prepay for the room only.
