So you want to start your own business ?

Imagine that you are wanting to start your own business ... how 'bout opening your own McDonald's. Everyone eats at McDonald's - they must be making lots and lots of money.
How involved could it be to have a conventional franchise?- How hard could it be to start a business !
The first thing you would need to do would be to buy a McDonald's franchise and - in order to qualify for any 'conventional' franchise, you would need to have at least $175,000 of your own money. (not borrowed funds!) However, the total cost to open this type of restaurant franchise will probably be anywhere from $450,000 to $800,000, (which goes to pay for the building, equipment, and other things necessary to do business). Forty percent (40%) of this cost has to be from your own money. (not borrowed money!) You will have to pay an initial franchise fee of $45,000 directly to McDonald's Corporation. The other costs in this $450,000 to $800,000 go to the various suppliers, so the $175,000 amount is only the upfront fee you pay to McDonald's.

Then you are required to go through a very rigorous and intense nine-month training period where you'll learn all about the McDonald's way of doing things -their franchise standards -- things like their standards for quality, customer service, formulas and specifications for all their menu items, their method of operation, inventory control procedures and all the techniques and methods McDonald’s uses to “do” business. You must agree to operate the restaurant from a single location, usually for at least 20 years, adhering to their guidelines and requirements for decor, signage, layout and everything else that makes McDonalds’ McDonalds.

When all your training has been completed and you are ready to start your business, McDonalds will offer you a location they have already developed. The exterior of the building will be complete, except for the landscaping – which you will be required to have completed. You will have to take care of interior additions such as kitchen equipment, seating, etc..

There will be constant support from a McDonalds Field Consultant, who will advise you on details and will be making regular visits to make sure you are complying with all their regulations. As part of your franchise contract you will pay McDonald's corporation a monthly fee of four percent (4%) of your sales, and either a flat base rent or a percentage rent of at least 8.5 percent of your restaurant’s sales.

The amount of money you make depends on many, many things, including the location and its popularity, the efficiency of your operating costs, and your ability to manage and control all the variables of doing business. Franchising is kind of like paying someone for his or her business expertise, their strategy for marketing, operations, public relations and the use of his or her name. Franchising is establishing a relationship with a successful business so you can use its systems, its expertise and then capitalize on its existing brand awareness in order for you to get a quicker return on the investment you have made. You are using the business’ proven system and its name, and having to operate it by its rules.
